About Protea & Pine
Our journey to custom woodworking and home goods
Howzit? We're Steve and Katie.
Born in Durban, South Africa, Steve picked up woodworking while volunteering in post-earthquake Haiti. While there, he was fortunate to work with several master carpenters. That's where we met and fell in like, then in love, with each other and with working together.
Steve took his newfound love of carpentry and woodworking back to South Africa where he managed a successful flooring and construction company for several years. In 2016, Steve moved to Katie's hometown of Denver, Colorado. We started Protea & Pine, a custom woodworking business, a year later.
We got our start building and refinishing tables for restaurants and installing custom built-ins for clients in the Denver area. Then, in 2020, we got a bigger taste of the slow life and refocused our business around what makes us happiest: family, nature, home, and adventure - in that order.
Today, Protea & Pine takes limited bookings for custom woodworking projects, including custom tables, floating shelves, and built-ins, and we source, sell, and create unique, long-lasting and high quality home goods that bring us joy.
Protea, the national flower of South Africa, symbolizes courage and transformation. Steve is named after his great grandfather Stephen, a prize-winning protea grower. The name Protea & Pine is a nod to both Steve's heritage and the Rocky Mountains we both love.
Through our company, our goal is to find and create goods that bring beauty, joy, and function to everyday life - and that last much longer than a season. And whether about the artisan, the origin, or the tradition, we believe that the pieces in your home should have a story.
We live in Denver, Colorado with our two pups, Jackson and Maisie, and our flock of fluffy chickens. When we aren't woodworking, you can find us renovating our fixer upper, playing in the garden, enjoying wide open spaces, or dreaming up our next adventure.
