Our Roots: About Protea and Pine

Our journey to custom woodworking

Howzit? We're Steve and Katie.
Born in Durban, South Africa, Steve picked up woodworking while volunteering in post-earthquake Haiti. While there, he was fortunate to work with several master carpenters. (Not to mention meet his future wife, Katie.) He took his newfound love of carpentry back to South Africa where he managed a successful flooring and construction company for several years.
In 2016, Steve moved to Katie's hometown of Denver, Colorado. We started Protea & Pine, a custom woodworking business, a year later.

Our name

Protea, the national flower of South Africa, symbolizes courage and transformation. Steve is named after his great grandfather Stephen, a prize-winning protea grower. The name Protea & Pine is a nod to both Steve's heritage and the Rocky Mountains we both love.
Through our company, our goal is to create beautiful and functional home goods that transform spaces and provide practicality for both families and businesses.

Our family

We live in Denver, Colorado, with our two pups, Jackson and Maisie, and four fluffy chickens. When we aren't woodworking, you can find us renovating our fixer upper, playing in the garden, enjoying wide open spaces, or dreaming up our next adventure.
